The Boys of Baraka

barakaWow.

We took in an amazing documentary tonight at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The film is called “The Boys of Baraka” and it primarily followed four of 20 boys plucked from the rough-and-tumble Baltimore City School District and sent to the Baraka School in rural Kenya.

The concept of taking inner-city 12- and 13-year-olds and sending them abroad to learn is equally innovative and controversial. There were just five children to each teacher in the East African school and the discipline and curriculum were designed to usher them into manhood.

The documentary takes some unexpected twists and turns and in the end you are left wondering deeply about urban education and school reform. That’s why you are encouraged to give it a look and challenge yourself. It is available through the typical outlets like NetFlix and Amazon.
