Sending the note or report card home with the child has become a thing of the past, but now some schools have revved up to super speed, immediately alerting parents to potential concerns well in advance of entrenchment in a much deeper problem.
USA Today recently ran a feature about online report cards, but schools in Texas are taking it a step further, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Jennifer Radcliffe:
The buzz of his cell phone alerts Fabian Arcizo of trouble on the homefront: One of his son’s class averages has dropped below an 80.
Just this month, the Houston dad signed up to get text messages anytime the boys get a low grade or don’t show up to class at Milby High School.
“I got three text messages today,” Arcizo sighed, admitting that he lets his wife dole out consequences for the slip-ups.
The majority of area school districts — Houston and Klein joined the ranks last month — now allow parents real-time online access to their children’s grades, assignments and attendance reports. Parents can set up triggers that send e-mails or texts at the first sign of trouble.
It really comes as no surprise that parental involvement is a chief indicator of the sustained success of any student. And it is wonderful to see progressive school districts give those parents the tools to best achieve their goals.
