Schools Building Communities first tackled this topic in December when the Brookings Institute released a study which found that one percent of all the media’s focus in recent years has concerned education.
Needless to say, to largely ignore such a transformational topic is not without ramification and recently Linda Perlstein, a former Washington Post education reporter and now the Public Editor for the Education Writers Association, talked about the future of ed journalism with Michael Petrilli of Education Next. Petrilli recently authored the story Disappearing Ink on this very topic.
One of the things that Perlstein pointed out is that national education policy is playing out in local schools like never before. “The reporter in a small town who’s covering classroom or school board issues is really covering national news,” she said. Local reporting, more than ever, will play a large role in the public conversation and perception of the reform movement.
Take a look at the video. It’s only seven minutes long and it provides insight to the future of education journalism and the concerns for where it is headed.
