As it relates to research and experience with mentoring for low-income and at-risk children, Dr. Nakkula is without peer. Before joining the faculty at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Nakkula was the co-director of Harvard’s Risk and Prevention master’s program for nearly a decade. His teaching and research focus on the development of resilience and the promotion of possibility development among low-income children and youth.
He is particularly interested in the integration of counseling, mentoring, and educational processes in urban schools to create contexts that allow students to thrive in school and during their transition to higher education and career opportunities. Dr. Nakkula holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communications and Psychology from Michigan State University; a Masters in Consulting from the University of Minnesota-Duluth; and his Doctorate in Counseling and Consulting Psychology from Harvard.
